#1 Hello everyone, this is my first post and I just wanted everyone to tell me what they think on my writing...It starts shortly after the game, so obviously they are some spoilers, and you probably won't get most of the references unless you've beaten it. Anyways, here we go... Chapter One Vaan leaned against the door outside of the Sandsea, trying his best to keep his eyes open. It was already past midnight and all the lights were off. At night, Rabanastre was no longer the great and comforting city he had loved. Still, Vaan stood alone in the dark, deep in thought. The past few days had its toll on him, and he was tired, but restless. And now, one of the things which bugged him, and had just occurred to him ,ran through his mind. A year ago, when Reddas had destroyed the Sun-Crest, Queen Ashe, himself and the others went against the direct order of the Occuria, of the gods. Instead, which troubled him the most, is that they had completely fulfilled Venat’s plans and desires. History was in the hands of men. Vaan begin to fall asleep, but was rudely awoken. "There you are!", Penelo shouted, "I’ve been searching everywhere for you." She ran up shoving him against the door. "You had me worried." "Come on, what could have happened?", Vaan said, yawning as he walked passed her. "I don’t know, but you should really get some sleep. Tomorrow is a big day." Vaan didn’t respond, walking back to Miguelo’s; she was right. Penelo followed behind him, worried about him, She had never seen him like this. Vaan wasn’t acting his normal self, and this bothered her. She wanted to know what he was thinking about, but was too shy to ask. She simply followed behind him with her head down. She wanted him to be happy. Tomorrow was the day Ashe would finally be ordained Queen of Dalmasca. It was meant to be a joyful occasion. Tomorrow would be the first time either of them have seen Larsa and Basch in a year, and yet Vaan was unhappy. Penelo forgot she was even following Vaan and bumped into him. "Did you say something?", Vaan asked, with a confused look. Penelo shook her head. They stood outside of Miguelo’s for a minute, silent. "You’re tired Vaan, you haven’t slept since yesterday.", she said, reaching for the door handle. She waited for him to say something, but after another minute of awkward silence, she went inside, leaving him alone once more. She grew tired of trying to get through to him, coming out empty handed. This wasn’t the Vaan she knew. Besides, she needed the energy for tomorrow. Vaan came in after awhile, finding Penelo had already fallen asleep, then laid down in his room. He never slept however, through fear or curiosity, he wasn’t sure which. Every so often he would hear a voice again, but could not understand it, or recognized whom it belonged to. He tried his best to ignore it, but failed as he watched the hours pass until the sunrise.. The Royal Palace was unusually quiet, as Ashe spent the early morning at the balcony overlooking the city of Rabanstre. She stared out in the stillness of the city with anxiety. She had put forth so much effort to regain her name and her heir, but was she ready? She was soon to be Queen of Dalmasca. Before, the responsibility was welcomed, but now she was unsure. It was amazing to her how just a few days could have such an impact on someone. She held in her hand the silver ring that was returned to her three days ago. She couldn’t believe it was true. Was Balthier really alive, somewhere out there in the world of Ivalice? She was happy, but a part of her was sad. Why didn’t he return earlier? Why did he wait a whole year? Would he attend the ceremony? She wanted nothing less than to see him once more. His last act to save Rabanastre had won her heart. She slowly slipped on the ring onto her finger and felt as if it were from him. "Don’t be afraid." She quickly spun around, overwhelmed in joy, but was quickly disappointed. No one stood behind her. She frantically searched the palace the remainder or her early morning, losing all concentration on the upcoming ceremony. She eventually gave up, never finding him, and more anxious than before. She begin questioning herself whether it was real or in her head. Whether or not she actually heard Balthier speak to her. She fell to her knees and broke down in tears. As queen, she couldn’t have these feelings. She couldn’t be so weak. Why had she received the ring? Why did Vaan return it to her. Ever since that day, three days ago she had lost herself in hope and disappointment and in dreams. She used to be so strong, but now she only felt alone. The morning for Penelo had been stressful and chaotic. She spent most of the time running errands throughout the city before the ceremony, searching for Vaan whenever she had the chance. He was already gone when she woke, and she knew that meant he had not slept again. Kite had helped her with everything, which she appreciated very much, however now, as noon was approaching, she sat in her room admiring her new dress. She also had bought a matching navy blue outfit for Vaan, but came to the conclusion he wouldn’t even see it before the ceremony. That was, if he went to the ceremony. Penelo fell back onto her bed, arms stretched out and staring at the sealing. Why couldn’t she be as independent and confident about herself as everyone else was? Why couldn’t she be the one to always be there, comforting her friends? She felt completely useless compared to the others. She could hear Kite and Miguelo arguing over something with an angry customer and tried to ignore it. "Only three more hours..." The way she saw it, was that the ceremony would fix everything, and Vaan and her would be happy again. She felt that Ashe, Larsa and Basch would once again show how much stronger they were than her, and prove their wisdom. Penelo rolled over, grabbed another pillow, and covered her ears. Outside of her room, they were still arguing, and Miguelo begin to sound very irritated. Kite had long since excused himself and went for a walk. All the other customers had done the same. She felt the urge to go help Miguelo, but instead kept the pillows close to her ears, almost crying. For some reason unknown to her, she lost any control of herself, as the sound of something shattering in the other room echoed through her body, and she wept. No one was even around to hear her or comfort her, as she cried herself to sleep. Most of the city began crowding around the palace, waiting for the occasion they had anticipated for so long. All of the shops were closing as the citizens finished up their deeds. It was such a beautiful day, perfect for the ceremony. Airship upon airship flew overhead, carrying the more, "important", men and women of Ivalice, whom received personal invitations and would have a seat waiting for them in the courtyard. To the citizen’s, this day represented so much. It was a day of hope, peace had been settled for a full year, and Dalmasca was once again a glorious kingdom. It wasn’t long before the noise awoke Penelo, as she wiped away her tears and panicked. The got dressed and ready as fast as she could, running about her room in disbelief that she would let herself fall asleep so soon before the ceremony. Basch and Larsa’s ship was nearing Rabanastre, as they admired the beautiful scenery. The fall of the Bahamut had a victorious feel to the city. Their first visit back to Rabanastre would surely be joyous one. Ashe hid in her room, nervous for the first time in her life. She was still uneasy from what had happened early in the morning. Vaan, who had been out alone all day fighting outside the city, made his way to as fast as he could to Miguelo’s but was still some distance away. The moment drew ever closer.... |
