Default Random Piano Music

Some music I wrote while I was bored.
Please list what song you are commenting on to make it easier to understand.

I only listened to 1 and 2 before getting bored, but 1 totally lacks direction, and 2 sounds less suited to a piano and more suited to a quartet (if expanded) of different instruments. These are MIDIs, so I assume you have a sequencing program, so try playing around with different voices and use multiple tracks.

Neel is right about number 1, which i listened to a few days ago. Did you employ fugal elements in number 2? Also, it sounds like 2 does not end on tonic which makes it sound really weird.

3 sounds like peices of it have potential, but those repeating notes are aweful, unfortunately. And I do not like some of the dissonances that you choose to use, both rhythmic and harmonic. It also ends in a spot where it shouldn't.

4 just sounds really random and the harmonies, especially in the bass, are quite muddy at times. Again, the ending is too abrupt.

I like parts of the melody in 5. The bass needs work, though. The music as a whole gets much better as it progresses. Also, the ending, while still weak, is much stronger than the ending in any of the other peices.

I'm pretty bad at endings - I can never get them to sound good. And as for number 2, I'm not sure how to write for things other than piano. Thanks for the advice.

The key to endings is to release tension. Put a big ol' V7 chord on the 3rd beat of one measure and then 'release' it by putting a I chord on the 1st beat of the next measure.

Also, 'fugal elements' just means repeating a musical subject throughout a peice in varying keys.

Attached is a fairly decent example I wrote up demonstrating the concept of tension and release.
