IN THE HARBOUR

In the harbour, I saw a woman.
She was digging at the shore
with her bare hands.
"What do you dig for my dear?"
"For what I cannot swim for,
nor can wait. For they are in need."

"Where are they?"
"They sing the songs oif love,
they cast the guiding light,
of the jewels within the sea.
The reds and the blues and the yellows
lost in the sea of green."

She tells me "All the pearls on the beach
are missed when the tides comes in."
But she won't. No-one here will tell me more.
Like when I can hold a jewel.

Stepping out among the waves,
a tempest without sound
without speech.
I drowned below her silence,
her bubbles and gurgles told me
"She has not come. Go away"

I ummd and ahhed "Snakes can swim,
so why can't I?" "Try and try then!"
I dive and dive like a balloon
but every night I'm left staring out.
A moonlit ocean, with nothing to light yet.
There are no riches in this bay.

One night, I heard the harbour sings a tune,
slower than my lips can move
or speak. I can hear it
and it hears me. Is this it?

Were they here all along?
I run. Run. Run. Running so long.
The woman's holes have spoiled her with riches.
She is singing the song.
The song to swim.
