Default [s] The Moon Knows

"The Moon Knows"

It was a typical night, a clear sky except perhaps

some srainy, nearly invisible clouds that blotched

areas of the sky. The half moon shown bright, lighting

the streets with its pearl glow as it overlooked the

world and its inhabitants as they continued with their

usual activities.

In Most areas they were simply asleep. In others, on

the darker, sinful, side of town, the night owls

crowded the walkways, talking, laughing, drinking,

pushing through the haze as the humidity permiated in

the air, clinging on their skin.

Further off, away from the glow of the neon and the

alcohol, a couple walked, giggling, holding hands.

Both were in their twenties and well-dressed as if

leaving a business party.

The Couple neared a street lamp. She pushed him

against it, sqeezing him gently in her arms. He smiled

at her as he gazed into her cheerful eyes. They kissed

quickly then held eachother in the moonlight, leaning

against the lamppost.

"I Love you," he whispered into her ear with a

tickling breath.

"I love you too," she giggled at she nuzzled his chest

with her forehead.

Out of a nearby alley, a man walked, smoking a

cigarette. The couple glanced to the man, startled by

his footsteps then strayed their attention back to

eachother after a moment passed.

The newcomer smiled at them with a twisted look in his

eye. The moon's glow shone of his eyes as he walked

toward the corner next to the street lamp.

"Don't mind me," he stated simply, a manaical grin

still spread across his face.

"...Just give me anything you hold that may be of any

value whatsoever," He de-ashed his cigarette with his

left hand as he reached into his belt and pulled out a

small revolver.

The couple froze, staring at the theif in a state of

shock. The theif took one last drag of his cigarette

before tossing it onto the ground and quenched it with

a twist of his booted foot.

"W.We... don't have anything," stuttered the young

man, holding up his hands as if to say 'Don't shoot'.

"Well my friend, if thats the case, hand over the

young lady," the theif's grin somehow widened as he

looked her up and down.

"No way, don't you dare hurt her!" he objected,

stepping in front of her. The theif's grin vanished.

"Look now, either you do it now or I shoot you in the

leg and kill her in front of you, how about that?" he

winked mockingly, "Make your choice now!" He held up

the gun with a steady, serious hand.

"Dont let me go..." she whispered into his ear from

behind, tears forming in her eyes. "...Please, oh God,

please don't let me go..."

"And you promise not to hurt her?" he questioned the

gunman, his voice straining with tension.

"Of course I promise," the grin returned with mocking

intention.

"No... No..." she said in a nervous voice shaking her

head in frustration.

"I must..." he repeated to himself and finally stepped

to the side, giving the gunman open passage.

"No!" she shrieked as the theif grabbed her wrist and

pulled her in as a human shield.

"You made a wise choice, my friend," he winked again

as he backed into the shadows cast in the alley, gun

pointed at her temple. He turned the gun to him.

"Now's where you run away," the grin dissapated once

more, only the gun and his eyes visible in the dark of

the alley.

The young man hesitated as she begged him to stay, but

the twisted eyes with the moon's reflectiong were

persuasive and he finally turned and ran.

He ran as fast as he could, hearing nothign of the

night around him. Thoughts of guilt, dissapointment,

hatred and worry flooded his throbbing mind as he

turned and leaned against the wall.

He caught his breat for a minute, regretting

everything he had done so far and finally decided to

go back and save his love.

He soon found the alley and entered the shadows and

darkness of unsure things. He kept walking a ways down

and through a hole in the canopy of buildings above,

the moons shot down a ray of light. At the bottom of

the ray, she was lying, covered in blood, curled in a

heaping mess. He coughed, in shock and ran to the wall

and vomited, tears swelling as he took in the harsh

rality before him. He turned and ran as far as he

could, trying to forget anything had happened, that it

was all just some sort of nightmare that he would

awaken from soon enough.

He neared the Magestic bridge near the parking lot and

dragged himself to his small car loosening the neck

tie that felt as if ti were squeezing his life away.

He paused, looking to the sky where the half-moon hung

as a mocking smile, grinning at his discontent.

"I didn't want it to happen... I really didn't"

He took a deep breath as he turned and leaned heavily

against the side of his car. He stared at the ground

with bloodshot eyes reveiwing the events that occured

not minuted before. With another deep breath he closed

his tired eyes as tears of anger seeped through the

tight lids.

"Why must you mock me!" he shouted to the moon,

holding up a shaking fist.

He collapsed to the ground, hugging his knees

together, weeping once more.

"Just leave me alone..." he replied to the moon's

silent answer to his scornful question.

"Not like it matters anymore anyway..." he muttered

into his knees.

He finally rose and walked onto the bridge, ending

with an exhaling breath on the rail of the walkway. He

leaned over looking into the mocking reflection of the

chechere cat grin below.

"Why do you have to look at me that way? Goddamn you!"

he cursed forcefully, shaking violently as his temper

rose, "I will wipe that smile off your face..." he

laughed as madness overtook him, tears flowing freely

now down his cheeks. He wore a grin much like that of

the gunman.

He climbed onto the railing then took a diving leap

toward the moon's reflection, punching toward the

approaching water. He crashed into the bay below,

shattering the reflection.

The water rippled wildly for a moment then went beck

to the mirror image of the perfect grin above as he

sank into the bottom of the bay. The grin kept shining

bright until it too sunk into the bay. At least until

the next night perhaps.

Thank you. I'm glad someone saw it before it sank into oblivion ^^. It's a short story I wrote about a year or so ago, but I liked how it turned out. I actually wrote it in a really good mood contrary to the mood of the piece, but that seems how most of my depressing pieces come about. Anyone else let me know what you think, comments would be greatly appreciated.
