#1 ON WITH THE STORY! It's just like every other day. Every other single day of my life. Well, during the week that is. It's a Wednesday. The weathers nice. I'm sitting in class, wanting the bell to ring so I can go home. I wonder what I'll do when I get there. No church for me. I'm not the church going kind of type. I'd much prefer to read. I'm on the bus. It's started raining. I hate rain. It's so dull. Not to mention I was in a car wreck once, and it was raining. Totally damaged my grandmothers truck. Hey look there is Berry's. That's the gas station near my house. We will be to Mrs. Granger's soon. To drop William off, then on with the bus route. Is that? Oh my go- *BAM*. (ten minutes later) Oooooh my head hurts. What happened? I look up. Everyone's panicing. I keep asking what happened, why isn't the bus moving, then I look outside. It's chaos. Some crazy oil truck has run into us. The front of the bus is smoking, I don't think that's a good thing. Charlie's hurt. Why isn't anyone getting off? "Why isn't anyone getting off, Mary?" I asked. "The lever to open the front door is broken, I don't know what to do!" I think she was panicking. Acutally I was suprised I wasn't. I'm the one with panic disorder for gods sake. Oh well, someone needed to take control of the situation. Or we were all going to die on this bus. Guess that person was going to have to be me. I screamed. That got their attention. "Someone open the emergency door. Jump out, someone else start handing out the little ones. Elementary school kids first! After them then middle schoolers, then high school. Move!" Everyone scrambled. Joann got the emergency door open and got out. Mary has started handing out the little kids. Everyone else sat in their seats. I think they might have been in slight shock. Finally, all the little ones where out. The middle school kids were on their way out, and Michael and some other kid went to get Charlie. They are strong enough to carry him out I suppose. Everyone is out now. I'm the only one left. I'm checking the seats, just to make sure someone didn't get left behind. I hear a whimper. Jogging to the front of the bus, I notice that it's little William, and it looks like he has banged up his arm. "Come on kid, lets get out of here." (outside) "Who's missing? WHO'S MISSING?!" screams Joann. "My son, my son, he isn't here!" says Mrs. Granger "Who else is missing? I've done a head-count and we are missing two people!" "Alice. Alice is missing Joann. She must still be inside. Oh this is not good, you know how she gets!" Mary said, fretting her hands. "Michael! Michael! MICHAEL!" "What Joann?" "Go back to the bus, see if you can find William and Alic-" *BOOM* "Oh no, my baby, my poor poor baby!" cries Mrs. Granger. Everyone is crying. They can't believe what's happened. The bus is completely ruined. There is smoke everywhere. (five minutes later; everyone has calmed down a little, except Mrs. Granger, Mary, and Joann.) "Hey look! What's that coming out of the smoke?!" some kid yells. Everyone turns around and stars at the massive grey smoke. They see the form of something. It is odd shaped, like a person who has been injured. Or maybe a person carrying a much younger person. Could it be? "Who's there?! ANSWER ME!" Joann screms. Whoever, or whatever it is, just keeps walking. Just keep walking until it's close enough to be seen clearly. "It's Alice! And it looks like she's got someone with her!" It was indeed me. And that person I was carrying, that was William. We were a little banged up, and his arm was still hurting him, but we were otherwise just fine. "Here Mrs. Granger. I thought you might be wanting him back. I'm sorry though, I couldn't get his backpack." I said. "Oh, Alice! I'm not worried about a silly backpack. I'm just thanking god that you are both alive, and relatively unharmed." She replied. (six years later) I'm sitting in my office. I'm 23 now. I've been to college, four years, and I've gotten a good, steady job now. But I often find myself just sitting down remembering that day. Charlie, the bus driver, was okay. He had a concussion where his head had hit the windsheild, but he was doing okay these days. And William, little William, just started first year of high school. I still randomly get gifts from Mrs. Granger, and each time I get one, there is always a note attached saying how thankful she is that I put my life in danger to save her baby boy. Sometimes I wonder how I did it. How I was composed enough to have a calm about me. Not completely freaking out like would have been expected of someone suffering from panic disorder. I wonder, how we all made it out alive. A few of us a little banged up, but alive. It's a miracle, I know that for sure. But I never question it. Ponder I might, but question I'll never. I'm just happy to be alive. |
