Her weapon should be a machete. Just to spice her up. alightweight machete that's power and speed. Two great things to have.
If I can add a character I would add:
Jade Cross age 17.

I vote spear because...

A. In the past it was a commonly used weapon so its believable that she'd be using it if she starts in a soldier atmosphere.

B. Most main characters use some kind of sword, a spear would mix it up a bit.

C. Dragoons rock, nuff' said.
