#1 "My name is Izanagi Idaten. Properly, Idaten Izanagi. Say it as you see fit. I am a Freakbinder. An ugly title given to me by the only person on this planet to call himself my friend. It is due to my powers. My power to remove the Freaks that curse humanity. Freaks of deformity and mindrape are plentiful, as are Freaks of tragedy, mischief, and plague. I am the sole being whose powers bring them into the realm of human sight. I am the sole being who can destroy them . . . and I will find and destroy the Catalyst: the being bearing sole responsibility for the presence of all Freaks of this planet." "So, basically, Freaks are these demon-things that cause trouble everywhere. Most of the time, it can be as simple as hiding things you know you just saw, or shoving this or that or some person, you know, just to stir up problems. Sometimes, they cause accidents that injure or kill people. They don't care, it's fun for them. It's how they entertain themselves." "So killing people in accidents . . . is that the worst that they do?" He shakes his head. "The worst way to die or even to live is with a Freak inside of you. Freaks can make you sick, paining you with full-body aches, fevers, nausea, a feeling like you're starving, and the like. They cause seizures, heart attacks, and strokes and anneurisms and hemmorrhaging. They're even the cause of physical deformity and retardation. Of course, they're far more severe when inhabiting a human since birth." "How do they get inside of you? How do they get here at all? Why can't we see them?" "It all has the same answer, sort of. They've pretty much always been here. They exist on a different light and mass frequency. This means that we can't see or feel them. But we're still affected when they mess with us." "What can we do about them?" "Well, there's really nothing we can do about them. Pretty much, they're like the wild animals of the world and the insects. We just have to tolerate them." "We tolerate animals?" "Well, yeah, the dangerous ones; lions and the like. If dragons existed, we'd have to tolerate them too." "I'd rather kill them . . . these Freaks. They do so much to ruin our lives and for what: to amuse themselves? It's not right. It's not fair." "You're right. It's not fair. But we can't exactly fight a war against creatures we can't even see or touch, can we?" Besides. That's His job. "Kira Sensei?" "Hmm?" "The bell rang." "Oh. Then, ah . . . go home." "What about homework?" "Shh. Shut up, stupid." "Quiet, Dorian. Study pages 36 to 40." "Ah, man. Good going, Benta." Kira watches the students leave the room. "You can come in now." "Didn't want to interrupt." "You're so very polite. Did he have anything useful to say?" "You know him. He rambles." Kira nods. The man at the door; a tall, athletic man in sensible clothing that can blend into a crowd, walks into the classroom. "He said there's an unusual amount of bad luck plaguing downtown." "We're getting closer." The man shakes his head. "Never assume anything. Who knows what's causing the Freak pile-up." "Hmhmhm. You're starting to sound like me." "Hm." "Just remember, I only came to America with you because the clues lead here. Though I don't understand what the Catalyst would be doing here." "It doesn't matter. I have to find it. That's all there is to it." "Okay, Iza. What's next?" --------------------------
