I beat them both. Level one mists, and I only had two characters with mists, but I got a chain of 12.

I killed them both easily once I figured out how Quickenings actually work (my characters only had rank 1 Quickenings).
Sigless
I saved the first one so I could come back later with a party that can beat Yazmat and show him who's boss :P
Only took me 6 tries, and leveling everybody up probably unnessasarily, but I finally beat the mandatory demon wall. I tried to get the optional one too, but did not succeed there. I'm going to try one more time, now that everyone has their quickening attacks. If I cannot beat him again, I am not going to bother anymore. XD

Well, I was level 25 when I did it.

yea, im only lvl 12-13 lol
so im trying to level up in the westersands.
umm...ya, you better,lol. you are wayyyyyy underleveled,lol!
Too big.
this is definitely one of the few games that makes you level up. im actually suprised i made it as far from what i've read so far
guess i just got some mad gamer skillz
... you can slow it down with braziers? I just kicked them in. Berzerk on Vossler, chained quickenings (10000+ damage ftw!), beatdowns. Win.
Keep in mind you can get a really nice sword (the Demonsbane) if you do succeed in slaying the first optional Demon Wall.
The easiest way I have found to beat him was by casting berserk on Vossler, and my 2 other characters with the highest strength. (Don't forget that you can cast berserk on your guys when you are not in the battle yet.) This gives you time to give them all protects to. After that touch the save point that is outside, so all your MP will be restored. Then go fight him, without wasting time, cause the berserks, and protects will run out eventually. Then use the person without berserk on in your party to get Quickening chains going.
With that strategy you will have both walls destroyed without a problem.

Yeah, problem is X-Zone, I found it useful to switch in a weak character for my good one without a quickening. Make the weak one the leader. That way when the weakling is X-Zoned replace them with the strong one.
Also, I had 3 ethers. If you have any, after you use your Quickening, use it on whomever has the least MP, so it charges faster. Martyr, and Inquisitor help.

i suck at using quickenings. my biggest chain was like 5 in a row.
I can't chain my quickenings right but I did get him with a 7 hit.
Vaan: 14, Balthier: 16, Fran: 16, Basch: 15, Ashe: 16, Penelo: 17
I can beat the second one WAY easy but I can't beat the first one...what am I doing wrong? I want to beat the first one so I can get (SPOILER)the sword
