Incredibly crass and rude characters aren't necessarily bad, but they don't make good heroes.

What you mean more brash white guys or more brash heros.

I'm not sure about Cid but Yuri Hyuga is sort of that type character from the Shadow Hearts, and personally I think he's one of the best protaganists ever.

Agreed, Yuri is one of hell of a protagonist

But I also think that anti-heroes like Cloud and Squall make great protagonists (as Yami_Yuffie said)

So in my opinion there should be a balance between those two.

I prefer a protagonist who actually cares about their work, the whole time.

Cloud played the bad@ss card a bit too long, I thought. He didn't really start caring until somewhere around the time when (SPOILER)Aeris dies. Before that, he's sort of just along for the ride.

Guys like Cid (FF7 Cid, that is) serve their purpose. They'd never make a good main character, but their role as side characters is clear, and they usually fill it well, as FF games are generally well written.

Really, I'd say FF needs more heroes like Ramza and Cecil. Actual heroes, not the silent, personality-less "badass".

Yeah, I mean, characters who look/act tough, but not to the point that they don't care 'bout anything or anyone. I think that a Solid Snake (Metal Gear series) kind of character is what I'm looking for. Someone who actually looks badass, not a character like this guy

I think there should be more protagonists that act like protagonists and not antagonists.

I don't think a hero needs to "look badass". Especially if they're a quicker character. Zidane didn't look "badass" but he was still an awesome lead because he had so much personality. It would have ruined the effect if he did look "badass".

    I agree.

We also need a black guy who isn't deformed (Barret), retarded (Barret), or dies (General Leo). I don't care if he doesn't get a line to talk, or whether he talks in a foreign language, uses a spear or fork and does 9999 damage, or has his Agility/Evade/Accuracy stat jump up to 255/is invincible while in a prison breaking scene.

Just get a black guy in there. Illegal sale/use of drugs can be restricted to the Asian guy, incase anyone is too squeamish to deal with a story that might actually be making a social commentary on stereotypes...
