We haven't even got a winner of the CK contest yet, but there are certainly changes amongst the staff already... I don't think that we can say a big enough thankyou to crono_logical and Samuraid, the leading staffers when it came to solving all of the problems you might have experienced at EoFF over the past five or six years. The fancy features, the forums-saving SQL queries, the optional Quick Reply... so many things have been fixed or implemented by these two since they joined that I don't think any techy admin will ever match their dedication to that end of things. Of course, things are different now and they both have other things to do with their time and we wish them all the best (and will surely come crying and begging for their help if we ever find ourselves in a proper pickle again!).

BUT! BUUUUUT! Things aren't all bad. rubah (aka Darth Allieson) and Psychotic have been made admin!

Eyes on Final Fantasy has a group called Recognized Members. These members were honored for dedicating their time and effort to EoFF in special ways. Once upon a time, these represented some of the most active and exemplary of those who posted at EoFF. We'd like to see that be the case once again. So without further ado, the following people have received Recognized Member status:

black orb - black orb has shown tremendous dedication to the art sections of Eyes on Final Fantasy for a number of years, and has created beautiful banners for our site.

BG-57 - BG has been one of the most active and helpful members in the Final Fantasy sections for a long time. Still talking about Final Fantasy games after all these years deserves some credit.

Goldenboko - Besides being one of the most active and dedicated posters on the forums, Goldenboko has volunteered to take on the 'dirty jobs' like cleaning up the Wiki and Mafia Archive (and for that reason his new nickname is Dirty Bird). He currently is also helping with the Events Committee.

JKTrix - JKTrix has provided us with heaps of gaming news and knowledge, most specifically in the General Gaming section. Since this is a gaming website we should recognize our gamers!

Ouch! - Ouch has been an active and contributing poster for over 6 years. He's spent that time hosting events like the screename competition and helping poor noobs in the FFXI forum. (see, I told you I would take care of you if you rigged me to win the last sn competition)

qwertyxsora - Our favorite green member has hosted numerous contests, and helped out with the Wiki and Mafia Archive. He's also a super nice and helpful guy, and a very active poster.

Rye - If you don't know why Rye deserves to be recognized, then you don't come to Eyes on Final Fantasy often enough. Among being one of the most active members in the last several years, Rye is currently dedicating her time by hosting the Eyes on You event as well as leading the EoFF Events Committee.

Even though their specific contributions are listed, it is not just that, but their overall attitude towards our website that allows them these honors. We thank you all, as well as all those who have been something special to Eyes on Final Fantasy in the past or present.

Your voices have been heard, and the size limits for user avatars has been increased from 60 by 60 pixels to 80 by 80 pixels. We encourage you all to make use of the extra size, but changing your avatar will not be mandatory.

This change will be implemented on a trial basis. If after a predetermined amount of time (approx 2 weeks) not enough users have utilized these new limits, or if the staff just doesn't like how it looks, then the size will revert back to what it previously was.

Today (or, a couple days ago, forgive me for having a mourning period!) we bid farewell our beloved Yameneko. After spending 4 or 5 years on the staff of Eyes on Final Fantasy, he has decided that it was time he moved on. We wish him luck in his ongoing pursuits. Yams enjoys softball and fishing, and vacationing in his mountain home with his wife Carla, and his two daughters, Jenny and Christine. (I added that last part because when I worked at longs that was for some reason at the end of every email notifying us of some exec leaving)

Some people think we're absolutely horrible, but they're terrified to tell us because they're afraid of the *smite*. Others have no problem telling us exactly what they think. Especially Raistlin, but nobody listens to him anyway. We've brought back the Staff Feedback Form so you can tell us exactly how you feel about the forum, and each one of us individually. It's an anonymous survey so there's no need to worry. Just follow the link at the bottom of this thread, fill it out, and send it in. You don't have to answer every question, but we really hope you do. We're also hoping most of you take this seriously, so please do.

As an Eyes on staff -- Yes “staff”, not “Staff”. Get it right. -- member, I've seen abuse on the part of the knights and admins for a long time now. Recently, however, the situation has escalated to the point where I was admined under the condition that I would not add The Pimp smiley to the smiley list here. I accepted reluctantly because, well I thought I would have my revenge, but instead we have admins who find some sort of perverted amusement in adding whatever words they feel like to the filter. It doesn't stop there either. While I'm bound from adding The Pimp and his presence to the Eyes on smiley list, other admins just casually open the cp and add whatever smiley or post icons they want.

Well, you know what? I've had enough! I'm here to tell all of you that I'm officially holding Eyes on and its staff hostage. Any non-essential changes to the layout or look of the forums will not be tolerated. This includes adding smilies, post icons, new style sets, etc. Any admin found trying to subvert my hostage-taking abilities will be dealt with. I also call out to the members of the Eyes on Final Fantasy community to PM me if they find any changes similar to the ones listed above. I will no doubt be too lazy to look for those changes myself. This will last as long as it needs to until The Pimp is installed at its proper place here at our beloved community.

Yeah, we have a nice ol' Artist's Gallery now. The old Artist's Gallery is now the Artist's Forum until further notice (ie, until someone with more imaginative power than I have right now comes along). Super!

Please note that we'll be a bit more strict on what can go into the gallery. That means no simple sigs and wallpapers and the like - make it stuff that you at least mostly created on your own without the aid of pre-made images. Hope that makes sense and all that!

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and you probably owe the majority of your thanks for this sucker to Samuraid, who helped me more than I helped him in getting this thing working. When a staff member sends you a final warning, they mean it. Final warnings go something like this:

'Do ____ again and you will be banned.'

Some members have not taken these warnings seriously, for whatever reason, and were banned.

Remember that it does not take one big event to get banned. If you continue to break rules and get warnings from the staff, even for small things, and you do not heed those warnings, you will eventually get banned for it. It is not hard to follow the rules here so I don't see any reason why this should become a problem, but it sometimes does.

Also keep in mind that final warnings are not necessary for bans. It is a courtesy provided to you (and us), because we honestly don't want to ban anybody, and we try to give people a chance to shape up. We hope people get it, but if they don't, we do what we have to do. Sometimes it is obvious that people don't get it, and that renders the final warning step unncessary. This is done at our discretion.

Eyes on Final Fantasy has traditionally prided itself on being a center of intelligent, creative discussion. Lately, this has been deteriorating.
While nobody expects you all to post like geniuses all day, there are a few things the staff would like you to keep in mind, in future:

1. Think before you post.
Ask yourself, "why am I posting this? Does it contribute to the discussion, or am I just posting for the sake of it? Do I have something to say, or is this a meaningless post that no-one will care about reading?"

2. Keep it clean.
EoFF makes no apologies for its strict rules regarding flame and porn. However, it would also improve things if we could all avoid making posts containing unnecessary and gratuitous profanity or innuendo. For example, swearing that's just being used to emphasise your point ("it was smurfin' great!") or making sexual comments, either veiled ("I wanna become a lumberjack, I've always had a peculiar fondess for fresh hardwood") or overt ("Hey eest, are you available for some sexual favours?"), without a good cause.

3. Think before you post.
Again. Is your post going to cause utterly pointless friction or argument? Are you just trying to offend someone? Is there a better, more reasonable choice of words you could use? The strength of a forum community comes from mutual respect. Exercising basic common courtesy is the foundation of this. Basically, don't try to aggravate other members. Even if the thread is discussing a controversial, divisive subject, word your responses in a way that's not loaded to provoke hostility. This isn't always easy to do, but it's good if people can at least make an effort.

This is all we ask. Don't post things that you know are deliberately provocative, dumb, unhelpful or in bad taste. Henceforth, the staff may be more active in deleting abjectly pointless threads that they deem Too Stupid™, or that simply don't say anything other members will want or need to see.

A little care and effort from everyone can ensure that this place remains a stimulating retreat, offering informative debate and a cohesive, welcoming community atmosphere.
We can do it.

In a surprise staff decision, [visible] tables have now been deemed subject to the image rules for Signatures. That means that if your table isn't perfectly clear and transparent (not used for positioning and formatting) it can be a maximum of 250 pixels tall and 550 pixels wide.

Who does this affect? If you're using a table in your sig with bgcolor="somecolorhere" then this means YOU! Otherwise, carry on as normal.

However, rumor has it that if you use the right color combination, leeza will give her blessing. But that's just rumor and you can't PM her to ask what they might be!

We have created a user group similar to the No sig for me group for usernotes. If you are in this group you will be unable to post usernotes, whether they be your own or someone else's.

We hope to use this only in cases of extreme abuse. If you see a situation that you would like a staff member to review, let us know via PM and we will check it out.

Basically, don't be obnoxious, guys. Spammy notes are fine. Notes that include more than 1000 smilies and crash some people's browsers are not fine. Double and tripe posts are fine. 10 straight posts of the exact same message is not fine. This usergroup is in place only to get rid of extreme abuse.

Everyone who really cared about their stories or anything else you'd like to censor has already found out that information in the three to seventeen and a half years they've been available. (FFXI was released on May 16, 2002.) So really, don't bother with the spoiler tags unless someone makes a thread specifically asking you to censor that stuff because he never got on the ball because of some stupid excuse like "That game never came out in my country." You're breaking my heart over here, Mr. O'Malley, really.

The same applies to whatever miscellaneous media you're discussing in the Lounge or whatever. Three years is a pretty fair mark. This is our official stance here and failure to comply will find you banished to the Phantom Zone forever.

Eyes on Final Fantasy Forums will be closed for a fifteen minute moment of silence for the tens of thousands of people that have been killed around the world on Boxing Day (26th December) and the following days. Over 80,000 victims have already been reported dead and the number continues to rise as the aftermath of massive earthquakes and tsunamis tore through countries around the Indian Ocean. Deaths have been reported in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Somalia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Maldives, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Kenya and the Seychelles.

Never before in recorded history has a tsunami claimed more than just over 30,000 lives (Japan, 1883), yet over 45,000 are feared dead in Indonesia alone. The death toll is expected to rise above 100,000 and could possibly double beyond this amount as illness, disease and plague begin to spread through the waters.

If anyone would like to help those that have lost their homes and watched their family members slip from their fingertips, you can do so by donating at the Red Cross website or any of dozens of other aid groups found in a listing at CNN.com. You may feel free to discuss this unprecedented disaster in the World Events forum, where a thread titled 'Asian Disaster' has been created.

As several of you well know, I don't like to update the EoFF album. As a matter of fact, I've had several photos that EoFF members have submitted to the album sitting in my inbox for months. After relentless praading, Sean has made it possible for someone to work on the album without giving out the password to the entire site. Henceish, any member who is interested and suits the following requirements is welcome to apply to be the next album caretaker. Requirements:

• Applicant must have sufficient knowledge of either HTML or an HTML-editing program. Most of this has to do with recognizing one or two HTML tags.
• Applicant must know how to copy/paste.
• Applicant must have steady access to the internet, excluding vacations and all that crap.
• Applicant must be willing to answer stupid questions.
• Applicant must be able to re-size and/or crop images, and save them in the appropriate format at a reasonable compression.
• Applicant must answer to me if they screw up.

I think that's it. If you want to do it, PM me. I'll probably pick someone within four days, maybe sooner. It's pretty easy since I have a system; I'll teach whomever I so shall choosed how to do it. EDIT: Oh yeah, and you don't get a "Site Staff" or "Cid's Knight" title or anything. Just in case someone gets excited thinking anyone else cares about album stuff but me.

Two members of our Site Staff have just been promoted to the ranks of Senior Site Staff! I'd make a massive speech but I already did that in the recent Ciddies thread, so they can go read that stuff there, but all the same: Yay! They've done a great job over the past year and have really earned this promotion. The Senior Site Staff now consists of Roogle, eternalshiva, Flying Mullet and myself, with Cid obviously being the big boss up top.

For those who don't know, Site Staff are the team who organise all work on the frontsite. There are three ranks (outside Cid).
Volunteers - aka "Vollies", these are the members who offer their services to EoFF.
Site Staff - The rank given to our top volunteers for their consistent efforts in the Site Staff forum. News Reporters also boast this rank.
Senior Site Staff - These people offer consistent ideas, maintenance and improvements to EoFF. They also manage how the Site Staff work.

Well, since vB2 has gone end of life while vB3 is in it's final stages of release, we've obviously been looking at vB3 to see if it's an option we want to look into. We've put up a little site (thanks, Yams ) and played around a bit to see what we think.

If you want to be involved in helping out with coding, images, graphics, feedback and input on the vB3 test forum, PM me. We can't let just anyone and everyone have access, but it'll be nice to hear your thoughts. PM me only if you intend on being constructive - its not a spam board and it's not an opportunity to request more features, but more so figuring out a) if it's worth the upgrade and b) what kind of middle ground of vB2 and vB3 we want to go with, should we upgrade.

As for everyone else, don't fret - nothing is happening anytime soon, no upgrade has been planned and nothing will go ahead until a lot of discussion is put into it. All we want to do for now is set up a 'proposal' for how we would go about it if something did get planned.

I suggest that you back up all threads that you have any personal attachment to. A clean slate, if you will. We are trying to take the actions necessary to have a backup, but there are no guarantees.

2. To eyesonff.com email users:

Our eyesonff.com email will be changing providers in the near future.

This is important for 3 reasons:

1. You will lose ALL mail you ever had on the server.
2. You will have to re-register your email address when open registration begins.
3. You will miss any emails that are sent during the 48 hours (estimate) period in between switches.

This means that you probably should back up any emails of importance because you will never see them again once we change providers. I apologize for this inconvenience, but such is life. With the change comes many benefits. I'm sorry, but it's better in the long run.

Twice each year, EoFF holds what would be the forums equivalent of the MTV Awards, with many awards both traditional and original - starting out as the EoFF Awards back when the good Dr Unne held them back on 14/09/2000 (that's 09/14/2000 to you Americans), they stepped up a level in December 2001 to become known as The Ciddies - named after our fearless (debatable) leader and creator/owner of EoFF, Sean, who was known as Cid for a long period of time during EoFF's existance.

The Ciddies are the largest event of EoFF's calendar year, and each time dozens and dozens of members come and nominate who they believe to be the best - or worst! More members get involved in these awards than any other event in EoFF, and there are hundreds of names that get mentioned every year. I'd like to encourage everyone, newbie and oldbie alike, to come and nominate who they believe are worthy of having a go for gold. That's right. A nice, big, golden head of Sean. On a stick. Any similarities to a vibrator are complete coincidential - we blame Oscar for that one.

Well, we got quite a few applications for the jobs, but after a bit of discussion, we've given three members the jobs. Jayren Marque (better known to his friends as 'Rainecloud'), El Mariachi (better known to his friends as 'Strider) and Kalinda (a site-goer turned forum-poster upon hearing of the hunt for news reporters) have all been set up to take on the task of EoFF News Reporter, and I'm sure they'll keep you all well up to date with everything that's happening in the world of Square-Enix and Final Fantasy.

Roogle, Spatvark and myself would like to thank everyone who applied for this job, it's great to know that we have such an enthusiastic community of members that are so willing to be a part of the most in-depth Final Fantasy website on the internet.

Roogle, Spatvark and myself have decided that the problem with the lack of updates is clearly not our fault, and rather the fault of all you people not having access to post news items up yourselves. Of course, as tempting as it might be, we're holding back on giving EVERYONE an account with our news system and have instead decided to invite you all to apply for the job. Depending on the results, we'll get 1-3 people to help Roogle, Spatvark and myself update the frontsite with anything that we find to be worthwhile.

Now, you can decide how you apply. You could even just send us in an application saying "i aply" if you want to. However, if you want to make a good impression, the best way would be to send us an example of how you would update the site. Oh, and anyone from an administrator to a newbie can apply.

Once the three of us have gone over the applications, we'll decide on who we believe should get an account and a chance to really show the world what they've got to say on behalf of one of the largest Final Fantasy sites out there, with arguably more information on the Final Fantasy series than any other website on the internet.

Things we will be looking at include:

Spelling and grammar - Well, obviously.

Length - Avoid one-sentence news reports and essays.

Trust - We obviously won't accept people who don't like us. xP Site Staff is a team, and we work together.

Use of only solid news - No rumours.

Facts / Quotes - Give answers, not questions.

Straight forward news - To the point.

Politeness - Avoid insulting us.

Promptness - Show how good you'll be.

Resources - Show us where you got your information.

Reliability - We want people who won't slack off after a month. We know plans can change, and we're fine with that. But we want people who won't just stop because they got bored or too lazy to do it.

We'll also give you the special treatment at the local restaurant and bar, access to the member's lounge at Masterton's secondary airport, and free tic tacs*

We've just created a new usergroup for former staff members in order to cut down the ranks of recognized members; Former staffers who were in the recognized member group have already been moved into the new group.

Due to the number of people I've seen with this problem at these forums (and off), and also knowing how many of you use WinXP, I think it's important to stick here.


This bug affects all NT-based Windows, not just WinXP, so also affects WinNT, Win2000 and Win2003. More information can be found here at the MS site. You can also get the patch for the appropriate OS there too, just scroll down to the Patch Availability section and select the appropriate one for your system. For once, WinME is safe (That's not a recommendation to use it though )

There is also a recent worm that uses this exact exploit in Windows (W32.Blaster.Worm at Symantec, W32/LovSan.worm at Mcafee), and I've heard that you may not be able to install this patch successfully if you're already infected by this worm as well. There are standalone removal tools at Symantec and McAfee, both with usage instructions, for those without virus scanners, though it's recommended you have a virus scanner running anyway. You should also upgrade your scanners from appropriate websites to keep them up to date.

For anyone who wants to use/is currently using one, do note that although they're not technically wrong to use (being a normal image to a browser, for the jpg/png ones anyway), please make sure that they still stick to the forum rules and signatures limits, including dimensions, and more importantly, file size, since being dynamic, they can vary in size. If it occasionally goes above the file size limit, it's probably either too complex an image or you need to remove something else from your signature.

Also, anyone who knows they listen to songs with foul titles or rude words in the title e.g. the f-word, either find a way to prevent them showing up in your signature (perhaps editing the filenames/ID3 tags locally on your machine), or remove the now playing script image completely (or one of us will be happy to remove it ), since if such words are censored from posts, then they are not permitted in signatures either. If in doubt whether some of your song titles are rude/foul/whatever, don't use such a signature

In case you have not noticed, the World Events forum has been made into a subforum for Eyes on Each Other for the time being. If conditions in the forum continues to go down the drain, it may eventually get removed.

Because of that possibility, anyone who can access EoEO will be able to view WE and discuss on what is going on with the world, but must be mature about it, or else their account will be removed from WE, as well with EoEO.

Just a casual update from the ol' Senior Site Staff to everyone out there who's interested. If you visit the front page, you'll notice we've been making some good progress with everything recently, a huge thanks in particular to bennator0 and Spatvark who just don't seem to know how to stop working (much love <3)!

Anyhow, we're still pretty much empty on FFXI, and we're still totally empty on FFX-2, so any people who would like to work on stuff for those sections, that would be freaking AWESOME!

And to top it all off, we're now opening Site Staff for Kingdom Hearts submissions after emails have still come in to the sitestaff@eyesonff.com email begging for it. So let's please our fans - remember, without the Eyes on Final Fantasy main site, the forums wouldn't have the members we have today. The feedback we receive for our site is still coming in to both email and guestbook - if you have anything you'd like to add, feel free to email us at sitestaff@eyesonff.com

I've just received an email that said it came from sitestaff@eyesonff.com containing a virus.

For most of you, this is common sense, but do not open *any* email attachments with the .exe, .com, .bat, .scr, .lnk, or .pif (this is what I got) extentions until you talk to the person who sent it over IM (or even send them an email to confirm and get a reply back that sounds like it's really that person). It is entirely too easy for someone to fake their return-to address.

.scr in particular may seem harmless, since you think, "Oh, a screen saver," but that's not what .scr stands for. It stands for script, and they can be used to delete files or even format your hard drive.

That doesn't just go for email coming from EoFF--it's just a general good rule for surfing the internet. The W32.mm.sobig (might have got that neme wrong, it's from memory) virus has been going around lately.

Eyes On Final Fantasy staff will never send unsolicited executable attachments, so if you receive any unexpected emails with attachments, delete them immediately.

I've got returned emails infected with sobig that I did not send, so it's safe to assume that any @eyesonff.com email can be spoofed by the virus sender.

You change the colors back to normal by going to "Profile" > "Edit Options", then scroll down to "Style Set" (second from the bottom, right above "Avatar") and change the text in the drop down box from "ed's technicolor nightmare" to one of the other two style sets.

Or just leave the colors as they are and invest in some heavily protective sun glasses.

The staff's decided that it's time to lighten up on the issue of spam, to a certain extent. Useless threads will still be closed, but it's going to be up to the discretion of individual Knights, so we're hoping that more fun threads will stay open and promote levity on the boards.


This does come at a price, however; The biggest reason we've been as strict as we have is to avoid taxing the database too much. A forum the size of EoFF does present a certain strain to the database, an in order to keep the load to acceptable levels, I'm going to be pruning the board far more often and far more aggressively. Sean's set a very ambitious goal of keeping General Chat to approximately 10,000 posts; I don't know if it can be done, but I do mean to try. This means that any inactive thread could come under a prune without advance warning--If you see a thread you really, really like, you'd better save it to your hard drive.


We will *not*, this time, be asking members to suggest threads to be archived, because last time that just led to the clutter being moved from General Chat to the Archive, often on one single member's say-so. If you like it that much, save it to your hard drive. What does and does not go into the archive is up to *us*.


Secondly, we are going to be holding staff evaluations sometime soon; We mean to provide an evaluation form for all members to fill out and send in; We're presently discussing means of ensuring anonymity in staff, and further notice will be posted in General Chat when we arrive at a decision


All in all, we hope that these changes will make EoFF a more enjoyable place to be for everybody involved.

I just thought I'd give you all an update on what we're looking for on the main site.

We're currently looking for people who have good grammar and are willing to put their efforts into improving the main site. Right now, we're desperately needing people to help with the FFX-2 and FFXI sections, which are currently a load of codswallop.

Also, if you could please check out this poll and vote on it, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Anyone who has ideas or anything of the sort for the main site is more than welcome to head into the Site Staff forum and tell us what you think. Think of it as another arts forum - you can submit your work, you can give constructive criticism to other members, you can let us know what you think needs improving and even (heaven forbid) tell us how well you think we're doing overall!

If you wish to contact any of the Senior Site Staff, feel free to send a PM to either myself (Loony BoB), Roogle or Purgatory. We're all active members of the Senior Site Staff, with the other two members being BOU and Sean. Sean is only there for emergencies, really, and BOU is there to help Roogle with the uploading.

We all take pride in your work, and we're so glad that we have you working for Eyes on Final Fantasy. The large majority of our forum members came by way of the main site, www.eyesonff.com , so it's vital that we do our best to keep that very site up to date.

If you want to see how active the site is, take a look at the polls we put up - they finish off with hundreds of votes everytime. In fact, the main site takes approximately 45-50% of the bandwidth of Eyes on Final Fantasy as a whole, with the forums taking up the rest. ...at least, that's what the funny little statistics that Scottie put up tell me.

But yeah, go visit Site Staff and help out in any way possible, even if it is just offering ideas or giving opinions. I'm hoping to start getting even more active with the main site once I'm back from my Easter holiday (ends on Monday).

The cause of the cheating bug is when you hit "back" to play a game after you finish--It already has a score logged for that game, so it thinks you're cheating. Just use the navigation links, or press "refresh" just after you hit "back".

It's time for the Third Annual Eyes On Final Fantasy General Election, and our incumbent Election Officer, Nait, has elected to run for office this year, therefore we require an imparital officer to set the rules, register parties and candidates, count the votes, and act as an impartial arbitrator in the event of any disputes.

For those of you who haven't been around from the start, the General Election is just for fun--those elected get no actual power. The original idea came from Mindfart in December 2001. The First Election was run by RSL, with a tie between my Goatsecs party and Del Snizz's Indepublocratic party. The second was run by Nait with an International Penguin Party victory.

The position is open to all registered members of Eyes On Final Fantasy, from Sean right on down to somebody who registers today. If you wish to be this year's election officer, please apply in this thread in the Help forum. In the event of multiple candidates, the Staff will choose one.

Also, the Election Officer will be given the password to the Election Booth account so that General Election-related Private Messages don't flood the Election Officer's personal PM inbox.

Alright, so long as you're logged in, you should be able to now get into the Site Staff forum. This is the replacement for the now-archived (inside Site Staff) Open Source Project Forum.

In addition to this, there is now a ranking system in place for all the lovely people who work their arses off for the site - previously with nothing in return but a measly pat on the back (for those who did not receive this pat, please PM me and I'll reply with one).

There will now be the following people involved in the site work:

Senior Site Staff (SSS) - Roogle, Loony BoB and Big Ogre Umaro.

Rooge gets a sparkly little rank and Staff Forum access 'coz he's just spiffy. He'll also be running the news updates, and has FTP access to the site.

Big Ogre Umaro will be rigging the pages that people submit to fit into the EoFF format, and also be using his FTP access to the site for apparently good causes.

I'm just gonna be an arse and run around talking about things but never doing anything. But this is all my doing, so count your blessings, peeps...

...coz you too can join the Official Site Staff! To do this, you need to read the stickied threads in the Site Staff forum, and then go around submitting things. If you keep showing your class, you'll keep your Site Staff rank (see Shoyku's posts, he's already got one, omfg). If the three SSS people wanna kick you out, you're gone, buddyo. But you can always fit back in by doing some work. =D We like to call this "motivation and encouragement". Really.

In time, we hope to get a few people who are set to keep doing pages whenever, and we'll restrict the forum so that only they can get into it (along with Admins and CK's, of course). Then they can have real fun. At least, a bit, anyway.

Recently, a long-standing member requested their name be changed back to what it was originally, and in the mean time, a new member had registered with that name. Because that new member had gone nearly a month without replying to the confirmation email, I deleted their account and gave the name to the existing member

That will be the last time I do that.

If you decide you want your name changed, that's fine, but be aware that if someone else registers your name while you're switched, that's tough luck for you, so think it over *very* carefully, especially if your username includes a name from a Final Fantasy game or an anime, because you run an especially high risk of losing the name to a newbie. Less so with a name like "Naitsirk", "Mikztsu", or "Citizen Bleys", but the risk is still present even then.

At present, we are discussing possible exemptions in Staff, but as matters currently stand, there will be no more deletion/renaming of newbie accounts (even unconfirmed) in order to restore anyone's old names.

In addition, it has become common practice that if you change your name (except in special circumstances, like the Gender Swap, etc.), that you will not be able to ask for another name change for at least two months. So... Be sure you have the name that you absolutely want if and when you do ask the staff to change it. It's no fun for us and confusing to other members if you go changing your name every week.

There's a time and a place to talk about everything, and maybe sometimes it's fun to talk about sex, but EoFF really isn't the place to talk about a lot of those things. We'd appreciate it if you would try to keep things relatively clean around here in the future. If you have a genuine question or problem that you'd like to discuss, feel free to do so (Eyes on Each Other is probably the right forum for those sorts of things). But just remember, we have a lot of little kids coming here.<br><br>

We'd also like to ask you to be careful what sites you're linking to. Don't link to sites with mature content or pornography or anything. We're going to be keeping a closer eye on things in the future. Keep it clean please.

Lately a lot of people have been taking modding duties on themselves, i.e. telling someone else that their thread should be closed, announcing that a certain person should be banned, etc., instead of just reporting the problem to a REAL Mod as you should be doing. Please stop it. You have no right to tell anyone else what to do, unless you have nice Cid's Knight or Administrator under your name. Even if you're right and someone is spamming, posting "Durrr, this thread should be closed" in their thread is just as spammy and a hundred times more annoying. You are annoying the crap out the Staff when you do that, if not annoying the crap out of the rest of the MB.

If we see someone making a habit of posting things like "*tries to close this thread*" or telling other people what they can / can't post or anything of that sort, you're going to get a warning. Things will proceed from there. Don't do that kind of thing any more and everyone will be happy.

Now, the freaking .sig limit is right on the screen where you change your .sig. There's no excuse for messing up 56k users like that anymore.



Some staff members have been warning .sig restriction offenders either in-thread or by PM--Since the restrictions are written right where you change your .sig, I shall not be doing that. I see a huge .sig, I will erase it. Plain and simple.

A few "additions" will be made to your Private Message Folder over the weekend.

One is a preview message addition which allows you to read the first 150 characters of the PM by simply rolling your mouse over the PM link.

I'm hoping the move to vBulletin 2.2.7 has corrected the Thread Not Specified bug--If anybody gets this error message, *please* notify me (preferably via AIM, but the Feedback forum would be acceptable as well).

If a couple of days pass with no Thread Not Specified bug, we can confidently tell our friends at FFL that we've got the solution--They've got it worse than us!

For those of you who don't know what the Thread Not Specified bug is, it happens randomly when you use the forumjump link (the drop box at the bottom of each post that says "Jump to" and lists all of the forums). It doesn't happen every time, so there's no way to test for a surefire solution.

For the sake of saving myself some time editting posts by hand every day, and for the sake of maintaining a friendly, open atmosphere at the MB, the F-word is now "censored" automatically by the MB. Before people freak out, we don't plan on censoring any other words in the future or anything.

Note, there are all sorts of nice ways of getting around the censor. tHiS might work, or th*s, or th-is, or t h i s, or 7|-|15, or putting some HTML tags in the middle of the word. Very clever. Please, don't use them though? No F-word any more, in any way, shape or form, would be the best-case scenario here.

Note, just because the F-word is the only word we're censoring automatically, that doesn't mean we're giving everyone a free license to start using every other swear word you can think of at will. Our rule stands as it is, namely, please try your hardest not to swear. We have little kids coming to the MB, and many other people who don't like profanity at all, and we want to maintain a nice friendly atmosphere.

Profanity has never been too much of a problem here, for which we thank you all. I hope we can keep it that way. Like I said, this is mainly just a time-saver for the staff, and it's more for the new people who don't know our rules yet than for people who've been here a long time. I'm sure people will contiue to respect our rules and act in a mature manner.

Probably there will be some people who don't like this decision though. Well, you certainly are entitled to your freedom of speech. The situation can easily be remedied if you follow the instructions below.

1. Go to http://www.digibuy.com/cgi-bin/order.html?vbulletin and obtain a license for a vBB, at a price of $160.
2. Obtain a webhost that supports mySQL. Cost varies.
3. Set up your vBB or have someone do it for you.
4. In the Admin control panel, go to the Censorship section, and check the little box that says "No".

And there you have it. You're now free to swear to your heart's content. If anyone wants to discuss anything further, hop over to the Feedback Forum and make a thread about it. Thanks.

A long time ago, a FREAKING, FLAMING IDIOT came to an ezBoard called Eyes On Final Fantasy, and started a little thread called "Word Association". That thread keeps coming back to haunt us, and it will not die!

That idiot was me.

Now listen: I, the one who started it, am the one saying this: It has GOT TO STOP. EoFF's database is now four hundred and fifty megabytes, not kilobytes, but megabytes, and the board won't let me prune. Totally useless spam threads like that that get to sixteen thousand pages in a day are too much of a load. Once our database gets too large to back up on a single CD-ROM, could YOU blame GSN for pulling hosting on us? I couldn't.

I just want to make this thing perfectly clear to all of you people who are about to scream and whine and call us nazis. There are good reasons for this, and it is NOT a negotiable issue. From now on, all "Word Association" and "ABC" type threads will be deleted. Not closed, deleted.

Don't play technicalities, either. If your "one word per post story" thread is deleted, don't whine because it's technically not word association. We're not about to bloat our database to even more enormous proportions just because somebody wants to play semantics. This has become a serious problem, and we are going to have to take serious steps to correct it.

As I'm sure some of you have by now noticed, Dr Unne has been promoted to the position of Administrator.

The Good Doctor has been with Eyes On Final Fantasy since...pretty much the very beginning. He was the first person to be promoted by Sean, back before we even went to UBB. For personal reasons, he left for a time, but we've been able to convince him to come back.

I'm certain that Eyes On Final Fantasy will benefit greatly from his experience and knowledge in the field of administration, and I hope you'll all join me in welcoming him back. Even though he'll probably hang me for making an announcement out of it, because that's far too ostentatious for him

Secondly, you can look forward to a shift in the way Eyes On Final Fantasy has run. Dr Unne and Scottie have been jointly voted as Chief Administrators--meaning they're in the job of making final decisions. It is our hope that this change will make EoFF Staff a far more decisive and effective unit.

This week, a few meetings and discussions were held in regards to creating a new group at EoFF. Tonight the final preparations were complete and I'm happy to announce the new group: "Recognized Member"

Potential members of this group will receive a PM within a day or two explaining what this group is, and the benefits of being in it.

Basically, a recognized member is one who has contributed their time and talent to the improvement of EoFF and the chat room. Members of this group will have a gold sign above their rank and have access to close their own posts.

Once the initial wave of members join, new recommendations will be made on a regular basis. This is something staff strictly does, so it's not necessary to ask to become a recognized member.

It's getting out of hand. I am having to warn people for swearing WAY TOO OFTEN. I like to swear myself. It really bothers me to warn people for swearing.

I mean, yes, "what's too far" is a subjective matter, and different people will put the line in different places. But the "F" word is <i>most definitely</i> on the other side of that line. The forums are supposed to be welcoming for everybody.

I like to swear, but I can confine it to private messages and AIM. Can the rest of you not try to do the same?

So you're wondering why the forums were down for a few days. The short of it is that the database got too big, so stuff was getting randomly overwritten, causing Big Problems.

From now on, we will be regularly pruning the board to get rid of old threads. If you want to save a thread, you'd better save it before it's gone three months without a reply--after that, it's fair game for deletion. We don't want to lose the whole forum in order to save some old threads.

Okay, here's the deal. About two days before I was going to close it for lack of interest, Magestar came back to life.

Presently, there are only 3 major players involved. The game needs some new blood. Therefore, I've decided to make some changes.

First of all, I'm introducing a free-for-all RP'ing thread. In other words, the game isn't closed anymore. Anybody at all can just post a character profile and join in.

Secondly, in the two main threads, I'm looking for people to take over the main characters.

In the thread following the Wolfpack, I'd like to have somebody take control of the characters Thierry Cedric and Gerald Matsuken. I'm assuming everybody in the Companions thread has given up, and hence all six positions are open again. The characters are Chexit, Mitsada, Chach, Bossker, Kross, and Serge.

I'm also considering starting up a war games section--see the poll in the Magestar forum for more details.

Note that the two main threads are STILL not open for people to just jump in--Those are the ones following my script. The people in those threads are Major Characters--immune from death, 'cause the script needs them. Major Characters must be auditioned for.

As Unne's leaving the EoFF Staff will obviously leave the administration without a Brian Carper, we've appointed a staff member to throw her body heroically over the gaping chasm his resignation creates, in hopes that we can all pretend to not see it (that way, no one has to clean up the mess >;D).

Mere words cannot dileneate the tragedy that has ensued today, nor can they alleviate the shock and pain of the millions of innocent people affected by this terrible event. There's been some interest before, so I just thought I should announce that the Eskimo Death Match tourney, which started nearly a year ago, is now complete, with Happypeepeehead (Rydia of Mist's Bitch--capital B, plz) remaining the undefeated Champion of Eskimo Death Match.

On a side note, I'm the one who changed Asorie's custom title to "Mrs. Shatner." I admit it.

The Fan Fiction / Art forum is currently being altered to become two different fora. Writen work will now be found in The Writer's Corner, while artistic works will be found in The Artist's Gallery. At present, The Artist's Gallery is the former Fan Fiction / Art forum, is currently having written threads moved from it to The Writer's Corner. So, if you see a fan fiction thread in The Artist's Gallery, worry not- it'll be moved quite soon. I hope to have the moving done in an hour or so, so hang in there. We also intend to move all of the literature threads from The Lounge to the Writer's Corner, but Proto and I seriously need a break right now. xD The seperation of Artist's Gallery / Writer's Corner is complete, however.

After observing signature size in general getting somewhat out of control, the staff has formulated these limitations for the size of your sig:

No more than 200 pixels high for images.

Total size of all images together must be under 50K.

Total sig should be less than half the browser window at 800x600 resolution. (i.e. About 250 pixels high.)

No glowing text.

If you do not follow these very simple rules, the staff will either edit your sig, or remove it completely.

Please comply with these limits by Tuesday, after which we will be forced to take action. These limits are pending change, alteration, or termination as Staff discussion continues.
