The tone of his voice matched the tone of the movie. Batman was transitioning from Gotham's welcome hero to an outcast of almost villain-like popularity. Gotham didn't want Batman anymore and he understood it, so his voice took a darker tone to it to match how he felt when he donned the suit.

I still haven't seen it yet, but those of you that have a problem with Bale's bat-voice may find this lulzy, although it goes on for a while.

It sounds stupid but if you think about it the effect was to make him more scary as Batman. I mean, wouldn't you be scared senseless if someone leapt out of the shadows and grabbed you and said 'WHERE IS HE!' in that voice. I would poop my pants and tell him everything.

His voice is meant to represent someone who cannot be reasoned with, and I think Bale pulled that it off quite nicely.

I like the idea, but it just sounds so silly.

I didn't have much of a problem with Bale's voice to be honest. It wasn't great, but wasn't as bad as some people thought.
