Spoiler: Where the phallus is supposed to be there is nothing, it is rather defined by bodily fluids or a hand gripping "air" or the edge will be slightly opaque-ish. Sometimes the empty space is filled in with trippy, psychedelic colours. It is quite weird.

I see. Is that intentional though? I've heard of some romance anime movies using intentional visual euphemisms for the male and female genitals, which I suppose was to differentiate it from hentai. (That's just my guess though.)

Entirely intentional. It is due to Japanese censor laws. That is why you have blurry/pixelated phalli in visual novel CGs and weird black bands through the head of phalli in doujinshi and manga.
