Calling is a good idea. You want an OS that will pass their identity tests for the updates and all the rest of it... and if they don't agree with you, insist on talking to their bosses. It can work miracles.

I had the same issue. I proved I bought the copy, they gave me a new key. I am American though, so they were obligated to make me happy.

yes just call microsoft and say that you got fried they will tell you a new number i did this dozens of times last summer while working in a computer repair shop

if it's crippled then windows is disabled 8) try to edit file permissions in windows? LOL WHAT PERMISSIONS??

Replacing your motherboard will generally warrant a Windows reinstall anyway since so much has changed hardware-wise, and the installed HAL may no longer be correct for the new motherboard anyway hence why Windows can no longer boot
