(SPOILER) Jasmine and Hub are lovers in another movie that Haley Joel Osment stars in: Secondhand Lions. In this movie, Hub (Robert Duvall) is one of Walter's (Haley Joel Osment) uncles so Jasmine was in Hub's younger past. The man who told the stories of Hub's past was Garth (Michael Caine), who is Walter's other uncle.
As far as the "She likes corn" thing, Walter gets a pet lion (old female) and eventually, she escapes her crate and runs in the field of corn nearby. "It's the closest thing to a jungle she's got," Hub says.
Again, you'd have to see the movie to understand it. It's a good movie so I recommend it.
