When his home world was being destoryed he couldn't do anything about it. So when he left he thought his name Squall would remind him of his weakness and not being able to help those who were lose to the darkness.
So he changed his name to Leon.

When Hollow Bastian was taken over, Cid, Squall, Aerith and Yuffie flew to the refuge world of Traverse Town. Because Squall was not able to do anything to save his home, he felt ashamed and went by a different name, so Leon wasn't attached to his old home, like Squall was...
