I'm going to reopen this thread because it's not about getting a sig made for them, they want information on how to go about making their own. I hope it will make for a good learning thread for anyone who would like to share any of their knowledge with others.

In that case, I point to the gimp for an image editor of sorts, where you can get started

You're not going to get far making a decent sig using MS Paint
