But the Dark Aeons are pretty effectively blocking the way.
If it wasn't for them, I already would've done that.

Ohh, International. I guess that's the downfall of having the Dark Aeons.

IIRC, only Besaid and Macalania are blocked by Dark Aeons. You can get to the other Trials without fighting any Dark Aeons. If you need to get into those two Trials, I'd say you'd need to work on the Monster Arena sidequest: by capturing enough monsters of a type, you unlock a boss which can be killed for Strength, Magic, etc. spheres, which you then use to improve your characters. I'd say the most important ones are Strength (horned monsters), Accuracy (insects?) and Agility (wolves). Against many of these unlocked monsters, a Hasted, Protected/Shelled Aeon with Lancet will kill them easily, if slowly.

*sigh*

I sold the Knight Lance, and many other items, to a shop keeper whom I forget.

Do I need the items in my inventory, or does just getting them once activate the sphere? I hope I didn't screw this up....

No, you don't need them in your inventory.
