Say you were starting a new game of ff8. What magic do you try to get right off the bat? This is more of a topic then it may look like. You can learn the card mod and get spells that way too. you can also go through the story a bit and draw. Or you can learn refines and gain magic that way too. So whats some magic you look forward to getting? Plus what spells do you use to junction?

I always liked refining Tents to get Curagas for a huge boost in HP at the beginning. I never was big on refining cards (because I was terrible at the card game), I'm pretty content with the stuff you can get from items and drawing.

Yeah tents are great and easy to do. (just takes a few tests and pays to get the money for them.
Cards:

Gespers turn into black holes which can be turned into Demi's with the time magic refine.

blood soul turns into zombie powder which turns into Zombie magic from L mag refine.

grats and buel turn into magic stones which give level 2 spells from several refine abillities.

Mesmerize turns into Mesmerize blade which turns into regens from L mag refine

the list goes on.

well its quite simple really, play the gate keeper at the enterence into Balamb Garden and he will use Abyss Worm cards, refine these into items with card mod and then tune the item into Tornado, the same person also plays Snow Lion cards which can be refined into Blizzaga.

Its quite a good idea to get as many cards as possible as early as possible, in my recent play through of the game, Squall had his second most powerfull weapon before leaveing for timber and at the end of disk 1 he had the Lionheart, cant tell you how satisfying it was to be able to use Lionheart on the Seifer - Squall solo fight.

Pretty much, getting Tornado's is brilliant for your Attack. When you have Diablos you can use his ability to refine Tri-face card's into Pain's, they really help with your Magic. Gayla's refine into Meltdown's around that point too, which of course is the best magic you can recieve for your Vitality.

I always wait till im level 30 to fight Diablos as he has Holy and Flare magic you can draw from him.

In my games, you're not level 30 until you're on the islands closest to heaven/hell.

usually just curaga, lvl3 elementals, water etc.
