I was a little confused by something Cloud said in the game.

I guess so, but I'm not sure if it's a bad translation, or just me misinterpereting it. If it's ok, here is the line:

Cloud: I never made it as a member of SOLDIER

Which I initially took to mean, he was in SOLDIER - he just wasn't very sucsessful.

He never made as 1st Class, even though he convinced himself he did; in his head, Cloud kinda combined his life with Zack's. A lot of this is explained in obscure flashbacks.

It's like the episode of Red Dwarf where one character implants his memories into another character, who then remembers, among other things, having his appendix removed...twice.

Cloud became fused with Zacks memories... hmm maybe materia fusion can fuse people too. Time to investigate.

the memory fusion came about while Cloud was under the influence of Mako Poisoning from Hojo's tests in ShinRa Mansion, during their escape from ShinRa Mansion Zack kept talking to Cloud telling him "war storries" trying to keep him concious, when Cloud finaly regained full conciousness he had blended those stories with his own memories giving him a convoluted view of his own life fused with Zacks life stories...

Don't ask me why Johnny remembers Cloud being in SOLDIER, too. Maybe he was delusional about the both of them.

I never really thought too much about that scene. I ran under the assumption that Johnny really didn't know Cloud all that well and just presumed he could get away with lying to him because Cloud's stories were a little... well, I don't know, off. Aside from that, it's possibly an overlooked mistake left in the game.
