Why do the menu screens turn black?

I imported a second-hand Final Fantasy 6 game pak from America a few days ago (I use a converter for U.S. games), and started playing.
Suddenly I discovered that for some reason, the menu screens turn almost pitch black.
This is especially common for the Item menu: the only thing I can see are the messages for each item, e.g. "Recovers HP by 250"; I don't even see the items themselves, like Potion and Antidote - only the messages for each item, everything else is completely black.
The weird part is that it only occurs SOMETIMES.
What's going on?
