I found the real life General Leo, and he was in the NBA! Any fans of Basketball will know who Chris Mullin is:

He's missing the mustache, but other than that, I think we have a close match.

I imagined Leo with darker skin... but that's only 'cause the character picture not the sprite.

I wonder if a remake or concept art would elaborate on the true appearance of General Leo. There is an obvious disparity between the character portrait and the character sprite.

The character portrait is basically a 16-bit representation of his Amano design.

I don't think he's supposed to have a moustache, though. It's honestly hard to tell, but I believe those are just his lips.

Muhaha, now that you mention it, those probably are just his lips... They probably couldn't use any other color on the palette, so it had to be the same color as his hair.
