Default Genie Codes

I've never used genie codes and was trying to figure out how to use them.
I'm playing the SNES version and have already started a game. Does this matter?
Thanks for any help.

I think you need a chip or something to add to the snes to use game genie, unless you're using an emulator, in which case it depends on the emulator.

However cheating can ruin the fun, and in some cases glitch up the game

Adding a chip is absolutely ridiculous. All you need is the SNES game genie. When you use it depends on what you want to do. Learn all magic or gain 5423075908475908437 exp can be done any time. Things like change characters "x" command to "xx" command need to be put in before that character joins the party.
