Uh, anyway, I'm pretty sure you can rename the characters, as per tradition.

I think I've seen YouTube video clips where the player has named their characters. According to FFIII DS Translation Wiki, you get to rename Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus when you first run into them during the game.

If anything is going to make me get a DS, it's this. I hadn't seen the screenshots until today, but wow. I really like the character design.
