I guess it's because they're adopted. They don't seem that poor, but their adoptive father whutzit isn't that responsible to let them fall in a cave.

I seriously doubt they'll use "kid" at all. The correct translation is Onion Swordsman, but FFX used "Onion Knight," so they'll probably go with that.
