Similar to a knight, you can put a double shield viking in the back row with the best armor you can find, and use provoke where a knight uses defend/cover.

This could help in boss fights with high attack damage single enemies.

But, no... I used Knight instead.

Thieves kick ass in terms of damage and speed, but they have poor defense (they can't guard) and a low HP growth rate, or so it seems to me from my thief Ingus.

Same here. I used a Viking for a bit just to see what they were like, but overall preferred the other two classes.

Same for me too. I changed my Fighter into a Knight right away. The Knight wasn't as strong as the Fighter, though, until I gained a few levels. This was in the NES version.
