gaining mp raises your max mp? never knew that. my anti spell is too low of a level to steal mp though.

No. Losing MP raises your max. Casting ASPIL on Zombies makes them steal your MP away.

but my party gets wiped out entirely in Pandeamonium...
in a battle againist Dark Riders the damage they give is:
Firion-2000-3000HP, only have 7805HP
Maria-somehow it's no attacked, it's the last one to dye, 3004HP
Guy-5000-6000HP, only have 9999, MP 463
Leon-1000-2000HP, only has 5754HP

If you are getting your ass handed to you in Pandaemonium, it's generally due to one of two things- Your HP is too high (yes, the game penalizes you for that) and your evasion is too low. Wear lighter armour, and use sheilds.

3100DMG X 3 doesn't care whether or not you cast Cure.

5000-6000 HP damage? That's really much! Your Vitality and Evasion stats are probably low, or your characters are equipped with terrible armor... unless the damage done by the Dark Riders is based on draining a certain percentage of your characters' max HP. If it's the third choice, there's not really much you can do about it. Try to raise your Cure spells so that you can heal for more HP, or bring along Elixirs with you to restore some HP/MP when your MP is getting low.

It does when it doesn't kill you in one hit.
