Strongest & Best Defense

In FF Origins in FF2 I didn't notice much of a difference with the Strongest & Best Defense options. I didn't even find the Best Defense Option that useful.

Is there anything special about the Best Defense option?

Strongest will equip whatever equipment is deemed the strongest, based on the item's defence, magic defence, and stat bonuses.

Best defence equips items based purely on their defence. Which is odd considering that defence plays such a small part in this game.

I remember one time when I chose best defense my character's shield got replaced with another weapon.

That's because shields don't increase defense.
