Do magic items affect stat growth?

I'm having Maria as a pure white wizard now, and she uses Canes.
I won a nice Magic Cane from a battle a while ago, and I have her use it
as an item in order to deal Bolt damage on all enemies.
Does this affect her Intelligence?

i dont think it works thatway. they have to cast it themselves to make it effect stats.
