I cleary was not thinking and I gave Ultima to my black magic user.....anyone else ever do this? Is the lack of Spirit really going to weaken the spell?

Probably not. Depending on the version of the game you're using the damage Ultima does will be based more on your spell levels than your Spirit value. Although it's worth noting your Spirit will go up when you use it, and I often have everyone using the Cure spell regardless of their class so their Spirit is often semi-levelled either way.

I think I also gave Ultima to my black magic user. It doesn't matter, really, since the spell never did much damage in the games I played. Holy and Flare were more useful to me.

It is seriously not of utmost importance. I gave my ultima to my black magic user, who was actually Guy and an axesmasher.

the first time i played i had everyone doing the exact same thing,so i just picked someone and hit a lol.

I always seem to find ULTM very strong in the beginning, but as it gains levels it becomes relatively weak compared to the other spells.
At LV1 it deals about 500% more damage than other offensive LV1 spells, but at LV6 it refuses to increase in power anymore.
