It's good, but it's not exactly user friendly, so I prefer to play something like the WSC version. Buying 99 Heal or Pure Potions isn't exactly too fun.

It's good to play through the game at least once, though, as this is the original English version of FFI.

FFI was obviously one of the prototypes for fantasy games and RPGs, so I think it's hard to not at least appreciate it if you're into those genres. The battles were remarkably balanced, challenging, and even if frustrating at times they almost always left me feeling suitably rewarded in terms of personal satisfaction at having perservered rather than annoyed at having to fight over and over.

It might lack the coolness factors that make later FF games so sweet, but for what it tried to accomplish I think it pulled it off almost flawlessly...for it's time of course.

it definatly started console rpgs into mainstream, although it was a long time in coming. good game with memorable tunes and moments. was one of two games that i first owned when i was 6 or 7 so for me, it IS the first rpg.

apparently FF1 was designed to save the company from going bankrupt so youve got to cut them a little bit of slack. its amazing what a huge thing FF has turned into.

Indeed it was to be Square's last game, as well as that of one of their lead designers...hence FINAL Fantasy.

By 1987, declining interest in the FDS had placed Square on the verge of bankruptcy. At approximately the same time, Square designer Hironobu Sakaguchi began work on an ambitious new fantasy role playing game for the cartridge-based Famicom, inspired in part by Enix's popular Dragon Quest (known to some in the United States as Dragon Warrior). (At the time, Enix and Square were separate companies; they did not merge until about 17 years later.) Sakaguchi had plans to retire after the completion of the project so he named it Final Fantasy because it was his final game, although it was also going to be Square's final game.

The NES version was quite fun to play too if you can get past the Marsh Cave and the huge amount of leveling up required for the cave.
