Default What's with the weird character browser in the opening menus?

So I was choosing a new game, and I picked characters.
I had the Fighter listed, browsed right and got a Thief, then I browsed back and got a Black Belt.
Same thing when I had this Red Mage listed, I browsed left and got a White Mage, then I browsed back and got a Black Mage...?
What the hell?

Why is this?
What purpose does it serve?
Why can't you just browse through a set menu instead?

Because that would have made things simple.

And simplicity is a bad thing...?

Personally I think these things always should be done as easy as possible.
Is the browser supposed to add to the challenge of the game, or something?

It's pretty annoying having to browse through the whole illogical menu everytime you're looking for the characters you want, especially since it isn't even necessary for it to be that way.

It might have something to do with the fact that it was programmed & created 20 years ago.

^^ Yes, that, and the fact that it would make too much sense to have a set menu .
