It is very annoying though especially if you're trying to do an exact search string as in a three letter word followed by some other letters because then it is technically over four letters.

Yeah, it sucks - for example, I can't search for posts with mentions of my username. But like Allie said, it's to prevent extreme server loads from small, commonly used phrases, or search terms that could common appear as parts of other whole words which would basically kill the DB server.

That's not as cunningly diabolical as I had hoped.

Is there a way to exclude common words automatically? Lots of search engines just don't register words like "the."

why can't we do what google does and make short, common words exceptions unless used in quotation marks?

it looks like it might be more difficult (time consuming) to change than thought, if this is in fact the type of search we are using here, and I have no evidence that it is or is not.
