It would probably be too chaotic to imagine at a site this large, but what the hell, I'll suggest it anyway. There's a really good hack on vBulletin.org for vB3.5 that manages to update instantaneously without having to refresh, which should kill the bandwidth concerns somewhat.

I think it's that box at the top of some forum pages that sort of scrolls through what some of the post are, but I more than likely am totally wrong. If that's what it is though, I don't like them. They're way too busy looking.

A saybox is, in my experience, generally at the bottom of the site. It's like a universal thread/faux chat. People can put in their names and post replies and such. With as much traffic as we get, it'd get really chaotic really fast.

Something like that would still require moderating and I could see that as being like trying to moderate usernotes. More visible, but way busier with everyone posting in one place. Not something I'd like to do.
