Cookie Monster was actually a French invention. He was originally Cookies and Milk Monster (Biscuits et Lait Monstre), and while gulping down his milk he would sing the praises of Louis Pasteur. When he was Americanized, the Pasteur references lost their poingnance, and so this aspect of his character and name were dropped.
