I used..errrrhhm...gouache, watercolor, color pencils, sharppen to do some shadowing, and I finally photoshopped the whole thing to make the colors look better and contrasts sharper. As you can see, I'm horribly lazy when it comes to backgrounds.

I try to toss in whatever I think might make the picture better. I even tried oil painting on a paper sheet one time but it didn't come out too good so I let go. I sometimes also use ballpoint pen. I suggest you try mixed techniques as well, it's fun and pays in terms of satisfaction.
By the way, don't you think KaiserDragon now has the most beautiful sig ever?
