It was Edrick in U.k NES and Link in Jap and also the remake! I No not who Edrick is but "Link" is a character in "Legend of Zelda" is he not?

yeah I figured that too... The civilians look like Link. Uhm, is Square allowed to do that? Use character names of other companies?

yes they are allowed to do that. If nothing else it's fair use.

In the US NES release, it says "Erdrick", too. I'll bet this was Nintendo poking fun at Enix, rather than Square poking fun at Enix, since the JP release [and the FFOrigins release, from what I've heard] say "Link".

I'd kill them both. They both are murderes that kill innocent animals for no reason.

Actually, that was thrown in as sort of an homage to Dragon Warrior. You see, the main reason FF1 got made at all was because of the incredible success of DW1 a few years earlier.
