When I first played FFVII, I thought that Red XIII was a form of big cat, not a form of a big dog.

Okay, I forgive you;)

I thought it was a panther, actually.

Technically, he's both.

He's neither canine nor feine, yet has attributes of both. He can speak at least two languages, and has a bioluminescent 'flame' in his tail - not very common in either cats or dogs, really.

Whatever he is, it doesn't detract from his profound coolness and intellect.

Red XIII = Neat.

There was a thread a while ago with the cat vs dog debate. I don't think it was concluded but basically he's neither like Big D said.

It's like debating whether Quina from FFIX is a Hippo or Monica Lewinski. Who knows?

I'm pretty confident that there were certain quotes in the game that refer to his dog-likeness, or something. I still think of him as a big cat, though. I can't help it.

I mean, LIKE a dog. Not a dog. I should hope everybody easily knows he's not either. xD

I've always thought of cats as using their claws as their primary attacking function. RedXIII uses his... headdress.

The only thing that's lead me to view RedXIII as either is when he is with Seto he begins to howl, which is a distinct characteristic of canines.

That's not the only time he howls, either. I can think of two, but the only one I really remember is after you kill the Red Dragon in the Temple of the Ancients.

I've always thought him to be more of a dog in physical appearance, but his intelligence level and calm exterior might be more characteristic of a cat.

Wouldn't that point more to wolf than cat? Espescially given he's just a kid, I'm definately not reminded of a kitten by him.

His face and shape seem to be lion-like, along with his tail (lions don't have the flame obviously, but they do have fur there). But on the other hand his affinity to the moon and how it increases his power is rather like a Wolf, or more specifically a Werewolf.

Or perhaps he's a mix of a cat, dog, wolf, lion and other various animals and because this is a fantasy game he doesn't have to be related to any of them. Sorry, I had to throw the smart ass answer in there. :D

Red XIII is Red XIII, he is unique and unlike all other animals, case closed ;)

As well as being part cat, dog, wolf and lion. He surely must be part hovering know-it-all with a dome instead of legs seeing how bugger-hugger (bugenhagan) is his grandpa

Bugenhagen is his 'spiritual' grandfather in my opinion. Nanaki's father (Seto) and Nanaki's mother (Nanaki's mother) both died defending Cosmo Canyon from the Gi so he'd have needed someone to watch over him and raise him. Bugenhagen was probably a close family friend, and so took on the task.

Bugenhagen said that Red XIII is "what you see."

They never say what he is.

Well, the only possible explanation I can think of is that he's Gogo from FFVI:p

myself included. though it makes sense that hes both/neither. its a fantasy world, he could be whatever he likes. be it cat, dog or some crazy creature that exists only in the realm of unreality.
......but i see him as a cat like thing ^_^

I think he looks like a mix of a Lion and a Panther.

He looks like a Lion and Acts like a wolf.

Why dont' you let the poor thing speak for himself? He says so quite clearly when you first meet him in Shinra HQ.
