Didnt you notice there is a similar cat following Janus when your first meet him, they are the same cat.

Yah; 'tis Alfador, his pet cat. Strangely enough, if you breed all the cats, the last one is purple, just like Alfador, and if Magus is in your party, it'll follow him around, just like Alfador...

You should replay the game, by the time you have him in your team, you should know about this.

Yeah, Alfador follows Magus around for a reason. You should be able to figure it out if you play through the game again, and pay special attention when you get to 12,000 B.C. the Kingdom of Zeal.
