General Chat Needs To Improve

A few examples of current threads:

http://forums.eyesonff.com/general-chat/109259-member-album-o.html
http://forums.eyesonff.com/general-chat/109242-im-here-make-change.html
http://forums.eyesonff.com/general-chat/109247-retarded-thread.html

So, has anyone got any suggestions? GC seems to have been taken over by a group of idiotic 8 year olds (and that's being harsh on 8 year olds).

I think those stupid photos with writing on them should be banned.

Maybe I'm getting grumpy and old.

I concur, although I openly participate in in fact all 3 of these threads (n-n;) but the way i think about it is, if anyone else anything more exciting or relevant to say then by all means come on down. But when I leave the board for 3 months and come back and see nothing relatively new in any of the forums I have to wonder if people are complaining of lack of activity, why isn't anyone just doing something about it?

People are attracted to stupid, mindless threads.

Like a moth to the flame, also, keep your serious business out of my internets, okay? Thanks.

It's not so bad, not much different than what it has ever been. It's the people who change, not the topics.

I think it's more of a community thing. I guess if most people agree that the current threads are funny and cool and whatnot, then the people have decided. If not, then maybe we should shape up and try to make it better? As Skt said, a bit of collective responsibiliy (not that I've been contributing a lot to that!).

P.S. General Chat is best when it's not serious. But I think there's a difference between funny and irrelevant, and just stupid.

When was the last time the forum was good for you Burt?

Burtsplurt
09-02-2007, 08:34 PM
Before the summer holidays, I'd say. I was posting quite a bit then (er, for me, anyhow).

Edit: don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it should go back to how it was in 2001 or something. We've been here a similar length of time, and even though it might not excite me as much as it did back in the old days, I know and accept (and enjoy, sometimes) changes and fluctuations. I just think that browsing this weekend was probably the worst that I've seen it. I'm trying to be objective, but I know that's hard and I may be way off the mark.

Every now and then, image macros are fine. But now a few members have taken it too far and have ruined it for everyone.

Although burtspurt I do agree with you for the most part, it's like flood gates are being opened for any person in the world to just post the first stupid thing that comes to mind.

I don't know how that would be improved, unless you could somehow scan each post for certain words but I can already read CBA'd on everyones face.

Maybe the "rules" or whatever should be a bit more specific towards general, or maybe some punishments?

Dear god, you don't know how hard it was not to post a caturday picture as a reply to this thread, you seriously don't...

Maybe just caution some of the 'worst offenders' via PM quietly in a nice way?

skt
09-02-2007, 11:13 PM
that is a difficult thing to try and fight back.

i don't know what would be a good answer, obviously nobody can be on here 24/7 (although it seems like i am) but there's gotta be a way to weed out these threads or make a forum for "spam" which is basically 90 percent of general anyways.

but then again, you'd have to change the definition of general i guess. ARG!

General Chat is the lighthearted forum though. If you make a forum for silly threads, it doesn't have much left.

Please get rid of the macros, if you can. I posted one once in a thread full of them, but they get really tired.

Cat macros are adorable.

All other image macros should be a bannable offense, I agree.

GC has always been not serious, but I agree that some members do post a lot of useless stuff just for the sake of posting. Their posts/threads aren't exactly spam but are on the borderline. The threads have barely a topic so it's not something that can be closed right away until it does turn into spam or ends up as a conversation thread. I agree that it does need improvement... so use your warn button people.

Psychotic
09-03-2007, 01:52 AM
Cat macros should be equal to other macros, but I think macros should just be treated like spam is rather than being a straight bannable offence. Delete it, and if they persist, warn 'em, and so on and so forth until pink title time, but I doubt anybody will be that stupid to get to that kind of level.

The best way to make GC better is to create better threads yourself.

I think GC has been pretty bad lately, but I'm too lazy and busy to make it better myself. So I can't really complain since I'm not helping fix the problem.

I am, however, going to do my part to clean up EoFF by banning people who create quote pyramids. Ban them to death.

I had to leave for a month, and then when I could come back I couldn't get back into it because there hasn't been a single thing I'm really interested in. With the lack of something to get into, the motivation to make threads worth getting into drops and it just doesn't help. If I had my own internet again it would be somewhat different because I could spend all the time I wanted around, but with the limited time it only hurts it more. With another couple weeks downtime coming again any day now it doesn't look good. The way to fix it is for someone to come along and post something awesome, and then that provide inspiration for others to do something awesome, and so on. The problem is how to do that and I have no idea what that is.

I miss talking to all of you in warned messegas :(

See this is exactly why I stopped coming for 3 months, that and a personal issue with a member in rl. There just isn't anything that's holding my interest and people like gobo are really ruining it.

The spam forum was just a suggestion really, there's got to be a way to filter these out like a "OMG POLL" forum for people who feel the need to. Or the idea of the split younger/older board. I'm 26 and don't need to be partcipating in poo poo pee pee threads every 3 minutes.

Yes I should have better things to do with my time, but I'm unemployed.:mad2:

1) Macros, including cat macros, are spam and should be treated as such. I've always been of this opinion.
2) x vs. y threads are okay so long as they bring about some kind of discussion.
3) "Post your Internet Quiz/Test/etc. results" should be treated as spam. They're pointless as far as I'm concerned.
4) Massive amounts of embedded quotes are indeed spam.
5) I agree that the warn button could solve a lot of the issues people have. Not that I read reported posts often, but other Knights do.
6) Despite all of this, I think General Chat has been pretty good lately, with threads such as the Mafia thread keeping me very interested. Not many non-players get involved but I don't know why not, it's entertaining!
7) Suggesting a spam forum should be considered spam and thus be deleted. :)

Let's avoid at taking potshots at individuals for now, please. If you want to discuss specific members, there are better ways to do it - behind their backs is the best one, of course. If you feel it is of dire urgency that you speak to the forums staff about any specific member then you can use the Private Feedback forum, PMs, email or a chat system.

I felt so oppressed reading all these 'grown-ups attack the young'ns' posts. But I agree, I was tempted to make a "Host your websites here" thread and have a randomly different topic. It's hard not to spam, because it's so easy and it's a good laugh for the one creating the thread, but then it turns into stuff like... ... ...yeah...
