EoFF going up and down?

I tried searching for this and came up empty so I ask anyways.

So sometimes when I try to access the site it seems to be down. What is the deal with that? Crappy SLA? Geocities type cutoff after certain bandwidth is used? Just seems weird.

It's been moving slowly for me a few times this week ; ;

well, some times were from the owners trying to move copious amounts of data, but I'm not sure about the others.

It's been a nightmare for me. I can't even get EoFF to refresh without Firefox crashing half of the time.

EDIT: How ironic. Right after I post this, I got to refresh the Index and it won't.

Same here... It was just gone for five minutes, now it's back again...

It's only been a problem for me on maybe 2 or 3 ocassions, and I'd just assumed it was either server strain or a result of me running torrents. I guess maybe there's a problem.

It's hard to host an FF forum and a pron site from the same directory :(

Huh, I thought that only happened to me. I am intrigued by the pron site though.

And now I can't load the Wiki, could that have to do with this?

I've been having the same problem too. I can't even enter the forums while logging in from my house. (I'm at college right now). So I wasn't able to come in here for the time being. I thought it only happened to me, but I guess I wasn't the only one, then.

Holy :skull::skull::skull::skull: this place blows. I just came here from a computer I have never used and this place looks like a :skull::skull::skull::skull: hole without being logged in and without adblock. Ads are everywhere and they even have the ultra annoying script that makes random words into search links.

I just had to say it. Places like that I consider the scum of the internet. EoFF feels...dirty.

Not sure what we can do about it other than voice our dissent.

As for the site being down, we have not heard anything from the owners giving a reason for this.

You are correct sir, and it's such a nice way to deter nice members to join. Yeah, really, what's with the ultra huge ads nowadays? We used to just have small-ish ads that went into a nice fitted spot on the forum layout (in the 2005 theme). Now there's just a big empty spot where that used to be, and out of place random ads below it. That really looks godawful, and I doubt it's making them much more money.

Seems that way. I just browsed the main site today for the first time in a while, and I wouldn't have joined it as it is now. Ads are everywhere. I'm appalled; when did this happen?

I imagine it happened after Cid sold the site to a guy who was adding new ads and stuff but not to the extent that the owners he sold the site to are doing.

These people must be making money off of these ads or else people wouldn't be buying and selling websites with this kind of crap everywhere.

I actually sent a PM of dissent to them a couple days ago after writing that other post :p I don't think anything happened... except one of the huge ads on the main site moved down the page a little, maybe :p

Dear Michael Cohen and Warren Wong,

As a member of Eyes on Final Fantasy since its original establishment in 1999, I would first like to express my appreciation to the both of you for the perpetuation of this wonderful site and community. I've seen EoFF grow from "The Highwind," a small EZboard gathering of teenage gamers to the large and global community that it is now. I witnessed the first version of the site, and have been with it through the many moves and changes over the years.

Recently some of the changes I have witnessed are of particular concern to me. The most pressing of these concerns is the dramatic increase in advertisements placed on the main site as well as the forums. I realize that to make a profit from the purchase of this site, one in your business must find a way to make a continuous income from the site. However, surely there are better - or more gradual - ways that do not so tarnish the name or purpose of EoFF.

A first impression of EoFF now would render it a commercial site based not so much on providing gaming content as on making money. It is also extremely aesthetically displeasing; I counted a total of five conspicuous and rather large ads on the main page (and throughout the site), in addition to the undeniably irritating links transformed into advertisements that seem to be on every page. Where the sole ads used to be is another advertisement linking to the forums. The forums itself also possess the link ads for unregistered members, as well as additional large and very out of place advertisements for both unregistered and non-premium members. Where the smaller advertisements used to be is a blank spot that is sorely out of place, as well.

I am sending this PM of concern not only to express my dissent, but because I believe that how EoFF is presenting itself now is of detriment to the site and community. I am not alone in believing that places focused so prominently on advertisements is often considered "the scum of the internet." While I could easily afford a premium account, I have not yet done so out of feelings of disappointment at the presentation of the site and obligation to the original goals of Eyes on Final Fantasy. The multitude of advertisements, I sincerely believe, will only deter potential members from joining and cause a long-run decrease of the current population.

Please consider this request to decrease the number of advertisements on the site and to restore it to its former name. Much appreciation for your time.

Sincerely,
Joy ---

I was all angry about it before, and was like DIZ SUX BOYCOTT but now I'm over it and don't really care. XD Yeah, I was bored because my internets suddenly broke after I posted due to a storm so I had nothing to do.

A first impression of EoFF now would render it a sexy site based not so much on providing gaming content as on making us all happy. It is also extremely aesthetically pleasing; I counted a total of five conspicuous and rather large boobs on the main page (and throughout the site), in addition to the undeniably irritating privates transformed into pieces of porn that seem to be on every page. Where the sole pictures used to be is another naked man linking to the porn site. The forums itself also possess the porn for unregistered members, as well as additional large and very out of place boobs for both unregistered and non-premium members. Where the smaller genitals used to be is a blank spot that is sorely out of place, as well.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but not only have I never seen any pornographic links on this site, but also, 4chan is undoubtabley the scum of the internet.

And boobs would probably increase traffic.

The porn is only for the chosen ones eyes.

It'd decrease traffic because people would just spend all of their time staring at the porn and not post.

And by the chosen ones I mean every one but you. :p

Anyway Yesterday I couldnt access this site for ages because it was too slow I thought it was just my crappy connection.

Jo, that's a good letter. They should at least respond.

I've just looked at the main site, and there's an advert integrated in the menu bar now. It looks awful and people will click onto it as it is merged in with the menu text. I'd be peeved if I was visiting a site and it played a trick like that.

The intermittent up and down thing is usually from me moving large stuff on the server :-) We're trying to keep that to a minimum. Please post here if similiar situations occur.

As for advertising, we're looking into a better placement in the near future.

My reply was in response to the adverts, not the server related issues. I had already actually posted that it was probably to do with large files being moved and lots of things being hosted on one server xD
