Titles!

I think we should be able to change the titles of our threads without being mods or whatever. It's really ridiculous that you can't change something with a spelling error or if the thread has been updated (Example: I had to PM a mod just to fix the title on EoFF Idol).

It could easily get very confusing if the members were free to change their thread titles whenever they wanted. I can't speak for the other mods, but I'm sure most of us won't mind fixing your thread titles, it takes minimal effort. My PM inbox is always open, sugarbuns.

It seems like the whole thing is based on the "few bad people spoil the entire thing". One or two people might abuse it so noone gets it.

The main problems with just PMing mods is...
A. Trivial things- I wanted to Change the title on one of my threads to "[s]Shades of Life ~Chapter 1 is up~" but that seems way to trivial to bother someone about.

-And-

B. Shy members- I know someone here who doesn't like to pm anyone he doesn't know at the site, because he says "I don't know them I don't feel comfortable doing it."

Can you edit the thread title within a given time frame from when you first make the thread by clicking on the edit "button" of your first post? Or does that only let you edit the post title?

That only lets you edit the Post title.

FM makes a good point. I know at another message board I frequent, IIDB, you can only edit your posts for a certain amount of time before you can't anymore. Could the same thing be done for editing thread titles (say, for only 5 minutes after the thread is posted)?

Could the same thing be done for editing thread titles (say, for only 5 minutes after the thread is posted)? That's a good idea, as it helps with typos. I fully approve! :thumb: Not to say that the "Christ Benoit" thread wasn't amusing.

You could also report your first post in the thread to send out a notice, rather than a PM.

But, yeah, like ColdenGhobo said, it's a few people who would mess it up for everyone.

Though a time limit would be fine with me.

Time limits sound good :P It won't solve all of the problems, but that's impossible anyway.

I think you should make the time limit for editing the titles of threads the same as the amount of time you have to edit a post after making it before the "edited" message shows up to the general public. Obviously moderators can see a post has been edited regardless, but isn't it a 1 or 2 minute period in which you can edit your post without it displaying it has been changed? Seems like that would work pretty well.

I agree that we should at least have this time limit so we can change the title if we make a typo.

The time limit is actually a good idea.

I think it just shows if you edit it after someone has seen the post. Of course that's usually a 1 or 2 minute period...

No Jesse, it's time based.

A time limit would be good, but having members change the thread titles whenever they feel like it? No way. That would be total chaos. :cat:

what if there was a way you could only edit it once or something.

As far as I know, users have always had the ability to alter their thread titles within 5 minutes of creating the thread by changing the title of the first post :p

I've been doing it for years.

For those who don't know, if you want to edit the title of a thread within that five minutes, just double click on the box containing the thread title in the forum. Obviously don't click the link to the thread. Just click outside the link, but within the cell.

Is that explained in the rules somewhere? I never knew that :p

You shouldn't need to edit thread titles!

Of course this solution doesn't meet Goldenboko's intial need, but maybe he'll be so excited he'll forget about that.
