I've never really experimented with parties, although I don't see why everyone likes the theif so much, personally I think that teh theif doesn't have very good hp gain, and in nes version only gets up to lvl 4(?) BM spells, lvl 3 with DoS. So really I don't see why everyone likes them so much. I personally like a Fi/BB/WM/BM party. You have the defence and attack power of the fighter, the raw attack power of the master, healing spells of WM, and offencive spells of BM, a relitively easy party. Only problem is the BB low defence, and it always seems like he;s the one who gets hit all the time. I'm also using a ROM to try a BB/BB/BB/Fi party, I haven't got far enough so my BB's kick ass, but they are getting close.
The party I'm using on DoS (Fi/bb/wm/bm) is the first I've been able to beat Chaos with, though DoS is way easier than the NES version of FF. On my old NES my team of Fi/Rm/Wm/Bm wasn't that good. I don't really like the rm either, they don't do that much physically, and they can't get all the best Wm/Bm spells.
So yeah, my favorite party would have to be the Fi/BB/Wm/Bm party. Its got attack power, and magic power, a pretty even distribution. Though I do need to go back through the final dungeon and get the Measume for my Wm so she can have some attack power.
Also I would like to note on the magical items that cast spells for you. I think they suck, period. You hve to ahev them equipped to use them, taking away from your def/att power. Though I am stating this in the easy as hell DoS pov. They are a little better in the original version, but not much. I normally just sell them/throw them away. Though using a solo party of soemthing of that sorts I would guess they are a whole lot more useful.
