Dragon ball is more of an adventure show, when Goku was still a young boy and had his tail, traveling with 'bulma' (the translated ver.) and oolong, and eventually others like yamcha and his little shapeshifting friend, to find dragon balls and make wishes. There are many episodes where martial arts are the focus, but again it's more of an adventure type show... I also preferred this to DBZ.
Dragon Ball Z is later on, when goku is like....20-something i guess and is focused almost entirely on fights.
